About FC Girondins de Bordeaux
FC Girondins de Bordeaux was founded in 1881, making it one of the oldest clubs in France. Bordeaux has enjoyed great success over the years and is traditionally one of France’s biggest clubs. The club is nicknamed Les Girondins, named after the French revolutionaries who came from the Bordeaux region. They are the current holders of the domestic cup, the Coupe de France, after beating Evian 3-2 in the final. Bordeaux’s home stadium is the Stade Chaban Delmas which seats 34,000 spectators, although the club are planning on building a new stadium in the near future. Boredeaux has won the domestic Ligue 1 title six times, most recently in 2009. The club also has four Coupe de France titles and thre Coupe de la Ligue titles to its name. The team also holds the record for most Coupe de la Ligue final appearances.
Many French internationals have played for Bordeaux including Yoann Gourcuff and Bixente Lizarazu. However, the most famous player to ever play for the club was Zinedine Zidane. Zizou joined the club in 1992 when he signed from Cannes. He made 139 league appearances during his four year stay at the Bordeaux, scoring 28 times. In that period he helped the club to win the 1995 Intertoto Cup and finish runners-up in the UEFA Cup. In 1996 Zidane moved to Juventus for £3.2 million.
The club’s current aptain is Czech midfielder Jaroslav Plašil. Other key players at the club include Cédric Carrasso, Marc Planus, winger Henri Saivet, Brazilian defender Henrique and former Manchester United striker David Bellion.
The current manager is Francis Gillot who took over from Jean Tigana in 2011. In addition to the club’s Coupe de France win last season, Gillot took Bordeaux to the round of 16 in the Europa League and earned a seventh place finish in Ligue 1.
