Real Madrid basketball (or Baloncesto) is the king's court of Spanish and European basketball. Has been for decades. It starts with the home arena: A Pavilion during some years, a Palacio (palace) during others Real was one of the first basketball clubs in the continent to add American players, who fell in love with the Spanish capitol, got their citizenship and made it their permanent home it was also one of the first basketball clubs to add plyers from the former Yugoslavia republics one of the first clubs to nature young talents before they headed to the NBA. The list of former Real players – Real legends, actually - is so long and so distinguished, there is really no point to start with the names.
Real's epic battles along the years with its perennial continental rivals are the staff of movies, TV series and books. They are simply too many to count, but each and every one of them is memorized in the minds and souls of basketball lovers,
Real Madrid basketball holds the record for Spanish league titles with 36 (the last after the 2021-22 season), as well as for 28 Spanish Cups and 9 Spanish Super Cup. On the European front, Real has won a record 11 EuroLeague titles (the last in the 2022-23 season, after a win over Olympiacos), 4 FIBA Saporta Cups, 1 FIBA Korac Cup and 1 EuroCup.
Real's all-time leading scorer is American Wayne Brabender, who played for the team between 1967-1983 and scored 11215 points. Also in that list: Sergio Llull (2nd place, still playing), Felipe Reyes, Rafael Rullán, Clifford Luyk (another American, the best center in European basketball, as they say in Madrid), Walter Szczerbiak, point-guard extraordinar Juan Antonio Corbalán, Arvydas Sabonis etc, etc. The list really goes on and on.
Felipe Reyes, who played for Real between 2004-2011 is the club's all-time appearance leader with 1046 matches.
Five of Real's all-time greats were inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame: Serbian Drazen Dalipagic, Antonio Díaz-Miguel, Pedro Ferrandiz, the late Croatian Drazen Petrovic and Lithuania's Arvydas Sabonis.
