Funk rock brings together funk and rock music; rock is of course a universal term whereas funk is a kind of music originating in the latter part of the 60s –a mixture of soul music, jazz, and rhythm and blues (R&B) which is very easy to dance to. Red Hot Chili Peppers, also sometimes shortened to "The Chili Peppers" or abbreviated as "RHCP", started life in Los Angeles in 1983 and are one of America’s best known funk rock bands.
Their style is primarily rock with an emphasis on funk, as well as elements from other genres such as punk rock and psychedelic rock. If you go to a live performance you will be aware that their music also incorporates elements of jam band with long passages of highly infectious improvisation.
Currently, the band consists of founding members Anthony Kiedis (vocals) and Flea (bass), long-time drummer Chad Smith; and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, who joined in late-2009, replacing John Frusciante.
In over thirty years at the top, Red Hot Chili Peppers can look back both on an enormous amount of sales – they have sold over 80 million records all round the world and can chalk up a number of major achievements. They have been nominated for sixteen Grammy Awards, of which they have won six and are the most successful band in alternative rock radio history currently holding the records for most number one singles (13), most cumulative weeks at number one (85) and most top-ten songs (25) on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart. Finally in 2012, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
During this time the Chilli Peppers have launched many albums which have incorporated some great and unforgettable songs. One recent poll produced this list of the most memorable songs from their vast repertoire: Under the Bridge, Californication, Snow (Hey oh), Otherside, Can’t Stop, Scar Tissue, Dani California, By the Way, Give it Away, and Wet Sand.
Apart from greatest hit combinations, the Chilli Peppers have produced eleven albums. Obviously every fan has his or her own favourite but here is a suggested order of merit.
Blood Sugar Sex Magik' (1991); Californication (1993); By the Way (2002); Mother’s Milk (1989); Stadium Arcadium (2005) which was a 28 song double album; One Hot Minute (1995); The Uplift Mofo Party Plan (1987) : I’m with You (2011) and most recently The Getaway which was released in 2016.
One rock journalist reviewing a UK gig earlier in 2016 wrote “Who’d have thought this barmy bunch of Californian dudes, who formed a band as a joke in 1983, would still be with us in 2016?
