The colors are the same famed blue and red stripes, the city is the same marvelous Barcelona, and the team spirit is also the same, always striving for excellence, with victories, trophies and a countless list of brilliant players who have left their mark on FC Barcelona basketball.
FC Barcelona Basquet is closing in on its 100 years of existence, a mark that will take place in 2026. The club started to get some acclaim in the 1940's, when it won numerous Spanish cups, but it went in a long declaim that lasted some decades.
Barcelona's revival was gradual and can be attributed mainly to one person – local hero and legend Juan Antonio San Epifanio. "Epi" spent his entire career (1977-1995) wearing Barca's uniforms, winning the Korac Cup, seven Spanish League titles and no less than 10 Spanish Cups. In addition, San Epifanio led Barcelona to six EuroLeague Final Fours, but he was unable to guide his team to the trophy. In 19991, while still an active player, Epi was selected as one of FIBA's 50 Greatest Players.
If there is one date in Barcelona's history that places it among Europe's elite, it is May 11, 2003. The names will be forever embedded in club's history, and they are: Sarunas Jasikevicius, Dejan Bodiroga, Gregor Fucka, Rodrigo de la Fuente and Roberto Duenas. Those fab five finally took Barcelona basquet over the barrier and brought home the team's fist EuroLeague title, after a win over Benetton Treviso. From the bench came, among others, Juan Carlos Navarro, Ignacio Rodriguez and Anderson Varejao.
Like San Epifanio, Navarro is another Barcelona legend. Other than a single season with the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies, Navarro played his entire career 1997-2018 wearing Barca's blue and red, winning two EuroLeague title, eight Liga ACB championships and seven Spanish Cups. After retiring from his playing career, Navarro didn't go any further, working for Barcelona's front office. In 2021 he was appointed the team's manager.
Other notable (and brilliant) Barcelona players include the Gasol Brothers, Pau and Mark, Ricky Rubio, Joe Ingles, Ante Tomic, Gianluca Basile, Arturas Karnisovas and Carlos Arroyo.
Up to date, Barcelona have won 20 Spanish League titles (the last in 2022-23) and 27 Spanish Cups.
