About River Plate
The famous white with a red stripe uniform, the tradition, the players, past and present, the fans, the titles – both Argentina's but also South America's, the fierce rivalry with fellow Buenos Aires' Boca Juniors, and, of course, the stadium, 86,000-seat Estadio Monumental. It's part of the lure, the mystique and the achievements of Club Atletico River Plate.
We really should start with the players – at least some of them – who have graced River Plate over the last one hundred and some years: The great Alfredo Di Stefano made 68 appearances for River between 1945-1949, in which he scored 49 goals, before arriving at Real Madrid in the 50's. He won two league titles and a scoring title while playing for River. Omar Sivori scored 29 goals in 63 matches for River between 1954-1957, winning three Primera Divisions in a row. Daniel Passarella, Argentina's first national team captain to raise the world cup trophy in 1978 (and later in 1986), played 266 matches for River between 1974-1982, winning seven Primera Division titles. Passarella returned to the club in 1989 and coached it for five years, and later between 2006-2007.
You want more? The list, it seems, is endless, and, of course, every name in it is on the all-time list of Argentina's great. Here is just a few chosen names: Manchester City's treble winner Julian Alvarez (23 goals between 2018-2022). Midfielder magician Pablo Aimar (82 appearances between 1996-2000). Claudio Caniggia (41985-1988). Hernan Crespo (24 goals, two Primera Division titles and a Copa Libertadores between 1993-1996. Ramon Diaz (five Primera Division tiles as a player between 1978-1982, five titles as a coach between 1995-1999 and 2001-2002), and then there were Radamel Falcao, Enzo Fernandez, Marcelo Gallardo, Gonzalo Higuain, Javier Mascherano, Ariel Ortega and on and on.
Two more names are worth mentioning: Starting with 2022, River's coach is Martín Demichelis, who played for the club between 2000-2003. The manager is former striker Enzo Francescoli, who made 113 appearances between 1983-1986 in which he scored 68 goals.
River Plate is a merger of two football clubs, Santa Rosa and La Rosales, which occurred in 1901. Up to now, River Plate has won a record 37 Primera Division titles, the last at the conclusion of the 2021 season, 3 Copa Argentina, 2 Supercopa Argentina, 4 Copa Libertadores, 1 Intercontinental Cup, 1 Copa Interamericana, and Copa Sudamericana, among other.
