About Rod Stewart
What are the chances of a Scottish by-decent, London-born guy with an extremely hoarse voice and spiky hair, who, before becoming a singer was a grave digger and his first and most passionate love (after blonds, that is), is football, to make it big in the music business? Well, quite good, actually.
Rod Stewart went through some changes before finally finding his way and becoming Rod Stewart. His first choice in life was actually becoming a professional footballer, but after few trials in the London-based lower tiers teams, he gave up that dream and embarked on a music career.
During the 60's, Stewart joined some bands, mostly playing harmonica, but it left no real impression. His big break occurred in 1967, when he joined the Jeff Back group alongside best friend and guitarist Ronnie Wood, who later joined the Rolling Stones. Two years later, Stewart Joined The Faces while begining a solo career. That's where everything took off. After a debut album that wasn't welcomed warmly and hardly sold any copies, Stewart released "Gasoline Alley" in 1970 and his career started to take off. It was the opening shot to a string of albums who would have hit songs. During that time, Stewart focused on blues, rhythm and blues and sometimes hard rock while his albums were based on a guitar and drums sound. He finally left The Faces in 1975, after extensive touring.
The albums and the hits started coming at a rapid pace: "Every Picture Tells a Story" (1971), "Never a Dull Moment" (1972), "Smiler" (1974), "Atlantic Crossing" (1975) – when Stewart left England in favor of Los Angeles, which yielded two mega-hits: "I Don't Want to Talk About It" and "Sailing" – "A Night on the Town" (1976) and "Foot Loose & Fancy Free" (1977). The last albums was Stewart's heaviest album in terms of sound, and it produced maybe his greatest hit, "You're in My Heart", written for his favorite football club, Celtic United.
At this point, one needs to take a big breath. Stewart's next album, "Blondes Have More Fun" (1978) produced some really big hits ("Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?"), but Stewart has performed a major shift in his music, throwing away everything he has done up to that point, in favor of the newly crowned disco-mania, that has swapped over the world in late 70's.
Latter in his career, after being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (he was inducted a second time, for being a member of The Faces), Stewart has turned into some oldies but goldies, renewing old versions mostly by American songwriters.
Rod Stewart has recorded 35 studio albums. In 1993, He has received the Britt Award for Outstanding Contribution for Music. He has also received the Diamond Award for over 100 million albums sold, the Grammy Award and was awarded as an OBE (Order of the British Empire).
