About San Francisco Giants
The San Francisco Giants baseball team are now based, as their name indicates, in San Francisco, California. However they were originally a New York team, the Gothams, before moving to the West Coast in 1958. The Giants compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member of the National League (NL) West division.
Under their two names, the Giants, one of the longest-established of all professional baseball teams, the franchise has won the most games of any team in the history of American baseball, and some suggest than any North American professional sports team. The team was the first major league team based in New York City, most memorably playing at the legendary Polo Grounds. They have won 23 NL pennants and appeared in 20 World Series competitions – both NL records. The Giants' eight World Series championships are the second highest in the National League and are tied for fourth overall behind the New York Yankees (27), St. Louis Cardinals (11), and the Oakland Athletics with 9. The Giants have played in the World Series 20 times (14 times in New York, six in San Francisco) but boycotted the event in 1904.
The Giants have won six pennants and three World Series championships since arriving in San Francisco. Those three championships have come in 2010, 2012, and most recently in 2014, having defeated the Kansas City Royals four games to three during the 2014 World Series.
With such a record, it is hardly surprising that some of baseball’s greatest players have played for the Giants since 1958. We can start with Barry Bonds, thought of by many as the greatest Giants player of all time, holder of all time records with 762 Career Home Runs and 2558 Career Walks as well as the highest number of home runs in one season and many other records as well.
Willie Mays is an iconic figure in baseball history. In his 2,857 games in San Francisco—which is the most of any Giant—Mays leads the team in career home runs, runs scored, hits, total bases,and doubles, among many other statistics.
Willie Lee McCovey was a first baseman who played no fewer than nineteen seasons for the Giants. He scored more than 500 home runs during this period. One of the most intimidating power hitters of his era, McCovey was called "the scariest hitter in baseball" by pitcher Bob Gibson.
Pitcher Juan Marichal won more games than any other pitcher in the 1960s and collected eight all-star appearances in those 10 years. More recently Tim Lincecum, a tw0 time CY Young winner, has pitched for the Giants since 2007. A three-time World Series champion, Lincecum helped turn the Giants into a dynasty by winning three World Series championships in a five-year span.
Other esteem members of the three championships are the catcher Buster Posey and the left hander pitcher Madison Bumgarner.
