About Sheffield United
True, its history is better than its present. Much better, as a matter of fact. The oh, Sheffield United's history is so rich and so meaningful, that credit is due. As well as show some respect. And the fact that the club is back to the Premier League is a good enough cause to visit the city that has gone through a remarkable change itself.
Sheffield United is one of a handful of clubs to have been both a founding member of the Football League in 1892 and of the Premier League 100 years later, in 1992. True, United wasn't the first football club formed in the city of Sheffield in 1889, as it was its city rival Sheffield Wednesday 32 years earlier. But the club was the first one in English football to use the name "United", taken from Sheffield United Cricket Club.
Incredible success was achieved in the first decade, as United won the League Championship (1897-98), the Charity Shield and the FA Cup (1899).
The famous red stripes for the shirts appeared on the turn of the century, and by the end of the first decade, United was such a decent football club, that it fielded 11 English Internationals.
Unfortunately, United's 1924-25 FA Cup win was the last trophy to be placed in its cabinet. Ever since, the club has won only promotions from lower divisions (along the years it has sank as low as the fourth division), but not much success in cup matches.
Truth to be told, Along the years, Sheffield United has not nurtured many leading players, but its academy has produced some very good players, that has honed their crafts elsewhere. Among them: England's Manchester City defender Kyle Walker Long-time Everton skipper Phil Jagielka Manchester United captain Harry Maguire Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.
So apart from the football match, there is plenty to do in the city of Sheffield. That once gray and gloom steel and factories town has gone an incredible transformation and today it is one of England's and Europe's greenest cities, with an emphasize on outdoors activities. Certainly worth checking it out.
