About VfL Wolfsburg
Vfl Wolfsburg, normally referred to just as Wolfsburg, is an interesting example of a sports team which evolved from a multi-sports complex made available for the workers at the Volkswagen car factory in the town. Other sports played under the company’s aegis include badminton, handball and athletics. The football club is owned by a Volkswagen subsidiary and since 2002 the Club’s home stadium has been the Volkswagen arena.
The city of Wolfsburg is best known as the home of the Volkswagen Beetle car and was only created to provide homes for car workers. After both playing and development struggles in the aftermath of WW2, the side had established itself and eventually reached the top tier of German football in 1954 where they stayed until relegation in 1959.
A long period in the lower tiers of German football then ensued until 1997 when a second place in the Second Division saw the Wolves (as they are affectionately known) gain promotion to the Bundesliga. Generally thought of as a mid-table Club, they narrowly missed out on a Champions League place in 1998-99 and played in the Europa Cup instead. They qualified for the Intertoto Cup for four out of five seasons at the start of the century, losing to Italian side Perugia in the 2003 final.
Much greater success was to follow. In 2007-08 Wolfsburg reached their highest ever place in the Bundesliga by finishing fifth but that was eclipsed by their first ever Bundesliga title in 2008-09, thus qualifying for the Champions League. The latest season has been one of great achievement: Wolfsburg finished second in the Bundesliga and can look forward to immediate entry to the Champions League group stage. In addition there was victory in the German Cup with a 3-1 drubbing of Borussia Dortmund.
Their top scorer last season with 16 goals was Dutchman Bas Dost with attacking midfielder Kevin De Bruyne topping the table for the number of assists – 21 during the season. Dost also scored a hat-trick in the match against Bayer Leverkusen.
