About Ipswich Town

By the Premier League's inauguration season of 1992-93, Ipswich Town was one of England's elite football clubs, as it has been for many years before. However, the ride lasted only three seasons, as Ipswich was relegated to the 2nd tier. Hard times were ahead, but for the 2024-25 season, Ipswich Town is back to the Premier League.

The had a short surge, as it waw promoted from First Division back to the Premier League in 2000-01, lasted two seasons before it was relegated again. After spending nearly two decades in the Championship, Ipswich was relegated again after the 2018-19, back to the First Division, now England's 3rd tier.

All it took was the appointment of a young, brilliant coach, Kieran McKenna, in 2021 to get the club back on track. Ipswich was promoted back to the Championship in 2022-23 and after just one season is back with the big boys. McKenna, even though Ipswich was his first senior managerial job, is already talked about as one of the up-and-coming English managers, destained to greatness.

Ipswich Town was formed in 1878 and played in England lower division. It wasn't until the halfway point of the 20th century, that two managers, two great men, two future knights and two future England national team managers, took the helms in Ipswich. Both now have statues outside Portman Road.

The first was Sir Alf Ramsey, who became the club's manager in 1955, led it to the First Division and by 1960-61, at the conclusion of it's first season, Ipswich was England's champions. Ramsey left in 1963. There years later, he would win the 1966 World Cup as England's manager.

The second was Sir Bobby Robson, who took over in 1969 and stayed for 13 seasons. First succuss was in 1973, when Ipswich won the Texaco Cup, a domestic Britian competition. Five years later, Ipswich won its only FA Cup after beating Arsenal in Wembley. In between, strong performances in the league, including runner ups in 1980-81 and 1981-82, led the club to be a regular in the UEFA Cup competitions, including a win over AZ Alkmaar to win the cup in 1981.

Since 1884, Ipswich Town plays its home matches in 29,673-seat Portman Road Stadium.
